Live From The Archive, Ep 4: Christmas In July

Fri, July 17, 2020 at 7:00 pm

It’s hot outside, which can only mean one thing…Christmas in July! Join us for a special archive presentation of The Nutcracker, but with a twist. We’ll first relive sparkling performances by the orchestra of favorite scenes from Tchaikovsky’s classic score, and then present our very own New Nutcracker featuring Duke Ellington's big-band adaptation with artwork by Gary Kelley and production by The New Live.

We’ll take a brief tour of Gary’s studio before embarking on his culturally-rich approach to the holiday classic. Recast as an American celebration, Gary's singular take on Nutcracker features indelible images of musical Harlem as a backdrop for a delightful story of one girl’s vivid imagination and the music that inspires her. Jason Weinberger will again host the program, guiding us along the path of ETA Hoffman’s tale as it makes its way through Tchaikovsky’s ballet, Duke Ellington’s big band adaptation and finally Gary Kelley’s striking visual storytelling
