Behind the Curtain

Have you ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes at a wcfsymphony performance? Our Behind the Curtain crowdfunding projects offer insight and a behind the scenes look at some of the things that a symphony requires to bring you the outstanding performances you see on stage, along with the chance to make a direct impact by helping raise funds for new equipment, instruments, and programs!

2024 Behind the Curtain Project

From percussion instruments to chairs and stand lights, equipment is a vital piece of a symphony's success, as it ensures that the musicians have what they need to put on a great concert. This year, we've identified two key needs that will benefit both our musicians and our conductor, Jason Weinberger: acoustics sound shields and a new conductor's stand. You can read more about these pieces of equipment below!

We hit our goal of $3,000, help us reach our stretch goal of $5,000 before Oct. 18!

Stretch Goal Announced! Let's keep the momentum going!

We still have three weeks before our end date of Oct. 18, so let's keep the great momentum going! We're announcing a stretch goal of $5,000 that will help provide the symphony with an item that's been on our wishlist for quite some time: our very own set of concert tom drums!

What are concert toms?
Toms are larger drums that typically range anywhere from 10" - 20" wide. They're used quite commonly in drumsets, however concert toms are specifically designed to be used in a concert hall setting. When hit, they have a deeper, more pitched sound depending on the size of each drum.
Concert toms are used frequently in symphonic music. In fact, if you attended our Sept. 21 concert, you would have heard them used quite prominently on the Jerod Tate piece! Currently, the symphony must rent a set of toms every time a piece calls for them.

If we hit our $5,000 goal, we can purchase our own set of 4!
Help unlock fun challenges along the way!
$1,000 raised = 3 sound shields - COMPLETED!
Bethany Brooks, our develoment director, will dye part of her hair blue in honor of the symphony!
$2,200 raised = 7 sound shields
The woodwind section will all wear party hats during a song at our New Year's Eve concert!
$3,000 raised = 7 sound shields & conductor stand
Maestro Jason Weinberger will bike two custom routes in Waterloo and Cedar Falls, creating a special design on the map. We will share the routes, as well, so anyone can ride them! 🚴

ACOUSTIC SOUND SHIELDS

Did you know that the brass section is the second loudest section in the orchestra (with percussion taking first place)? Sitting in front of them is our woodwind section, who receive the full force of their sound. At times, this can create issues with their ability to hear the rest of the orchestra and can affect their performance.

We are looking to protect our woodwind musicians’ ears by purchasing seven new acoustic sound shields.  At just over $300 each, these transparent shields easily attach to the musicians' chairs and are designed to deflect sound waves away from the woodwinds without blocking the vision of the brass players!

NEW CONDUCTOR STAND

It's out with the old and in with the new! Our conductor, Jason Weinberger, has been with the wcfsymphony for 22 years and his conductor stand was already here when he arrived. After MANY good years of use and countless concerts, it’s time for a replacement.

Conductor scores can be massive, and we need a sturdy stand that can handle them!
Help us get a new conductor stand!
